The 2026 Verano Season Outlook

The 2026 Verano Season Outlook

We are well into the New Year, and Costa Rica's verano (summer dry season) is delivering pristine conditions for the 2026 fishing season. The combination of warm currents and minimal rainfall has created a "nutrient highway" just offshore, resulting in an abundance of catches that promises to make your charter excursion unforgettable.

At Adventure Tours Costa Rica, we prioritize safety, comfort, and expert guidance. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a family looking for a safe day on the water, our captains are locally vetted to ensure the highest standards.

Weather & Conditions: What Anglers Need to Know

January offers the calmest waters of the year for offshore runs.

January is statistically one of the driest and warmest months on the Central Pacific Coast, with highs hovering comfortably around 85°F (29°C). For accurate, real-time meteorological data, we rely on the IMN Estación Herradura to monitor conditions daily.

Pro Tip for January 2026: While seas are generally flat, the average wind speed picks up slightly this month (around 5.5 mph). This creates a perfect surface "chop" that often stimulates surface feeding for billfish, making them easier to spot.

Inshore Targets: The Roosterfish Run

If you prefer calmer waters and high action, our inshore charters are currently reporting aggressive bites near the rocky outcroppings along the Jaco coast.

  • Target Species: Roosterfish (Pez Gallo), Snapper, Jack Crevalle.
  • Depth: 50 to 60 feet.

Although snapper season is winding down, January is the absolute peak for Roosterfish. These exotic fighters are famous for their "mohawk" dorsal fins and powerful runs. We are also seeing high numbers of Sailfish cruising surprisingly close to shore this month, adding a potential trophy bonus to your half-day trip.

Celebrity News: Michael Jordan & 'Catch 23' in Town

The 2026 season has kicked off with a massive buzz along the coast. NBA legend Michael Jordan touched down in Costa Rica this week (January 14) to compete in the 10th Annual Pelagic Rockstar Offshore Tournament just down the coast in Quepos.

Jordan’s iconic 80-foot Viking yacht, Catch 23, is currently patrolling the same Pacific waters you will be fishing. His presence is a huge testament to the world-class quality of fishing we are experiencing right now. With the Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown (Leg 1) also kicking off on January 21st, the ocean is teeming with tournament-grade energy.

You don't need an NBA contract to fish like a legend. While MJ is chasing billfish on a private yacht, our fleet fishes the exact same fertile grounds. Whether you are on our 52' Hatteras or a 32' Maverick, you are dropping lines in the same "Jurassic Park" of sportfishing.

Offshore Giants: Tuna & Marlin Alert

For those chasing bucket-list giants, January is synonymous with Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin. The deep waters off Los Sueños are currently holding massive schools of spinner dolphins, which is the #1 indicator of Yellowfin Tuna below.

  • Yellowfin Tuna: Weighing in at over 300+ lbs this season.
  • Marlin (Blue & Black): Numbers are increasing daily as we approach the February peak.
