Costa Rica Fishing Report May 2021

May opens with Labor Day, a national holiday for Costa Ricans; an excellent opportunity to experience amazing fishing spots, beautiful record-setting catches, and this year’s widest variety of species on the Pacific Coast.

Massive Fishing of Your Dreams

Gorgeous Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna

Gear up for a packed summer in the North Pacific. May through August is shaping up to bring out huge populations across the board. In Tamarindo, Chad Bogg and his family went out last month and captured these massive beauties on Outcast. That’s some gorgeous Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, and Cubera Snapper!

Up north, the wind subsides this month, bringing in great Billfish. Sailfish, and Blue Marlin all up and down the coast. Now is a great time to start practicing for next year’s Triple Crown Tournament in Los Sueños.

Species Check

May marks the beginning of the transitional season on the Pacific Coast that lasts until November. Expect excellent fishing all up and down the Pacific Coast until June.

There’s great fishing of all species out in Los Sueños this May, but Blue Marlin, Roosterfish, and Snapper are at their peak this month. You might just catch something extraordinary.

May is also the start of the rainy season on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, so make sure you check the weather before you head out for some fantastic fishing this month.

If you’re looking for Sailfish, the Northern and Southern Pacific are your best bets.

Lavish Space, Fresh Rain, And Lots of Sun

May is a great time to head to Costa Rica because of its Green Season. This means more available charters and hotels, as there are generally fewer tourists during this time.

Along the Pacific Coast, you can expect temperatures between 71 – 90˙ F (22 – 32˙ C). Sunrise is between 5:15 – 5:20am, and sunset is between 5:50 – 6pm.

The South Pacific sees the rainy season officially begin in May. The mornings are typically nice and sunny but be sure to plan for heavy afternoon showers. The Central and South Pacific Coasts can see between 16 – 24 inches of rain this month.

Journey To Los Sueños

In English, Los Sueños means “the dreams.” It’s no wonder that this gorgeous Central Pacific location is world-famous for the best captains, crews, and charters for some astounding sportfishing.

Los Sueños offers something for new and seasoned anglers. With a vast, top-class selection of sportfishing charters, you can see why this is one of the world’s favorite fishing spots.

There are loads of quality-certified sportfishing charters available to take you out for the fishing of your dreams this summer. Book your day out on the water while the bite is hot.

By good, we mean fishing that sets world records. In 2015, the first leg of the Los Sueños Triple Crown Tournament saw over 90 fish an hour released, for a total of 2,170 Billfish. That’s 1.5 fish every minute. Over three days, 42 teams set this world record.

The Los Sueños Resort & Marina has every amenity and luxury you need for an incredible stay on- and off-shore. Travel + Leisure added this stunning resort to their highly respected World’s Best Awards. Plus, you’re in great company with anglers who love their craft. Make the trek every year to enjoy the calm waters and quick rides to some hands-down unbelievable fishing.
