Green Season Gold: What's Biting in August?

If you’re heading to Costa Rica for a sportfishing trip in August, you’re arriving at a fantastic time. While it's the heart of the "green season," these regular afternoon showers are an angler's best friend. The runoff from the lush coastline flushes debris and nutrients into the sea, creating floating structures that attract baitfish—and, as a result, the trophy-sized predators that feed on them.

August weather in the Jaco and Los Sueños area is reliably tropical. Expect warm mornings with calm seas, with average temperatures in the mid to upper 80s (°F). The showers typically arrive in the afternoon, well after you've had a full morning of prime fishing action.

The Billfish Bite is Strong

Despite being outside of the peak winter season, our Los Sueños fishing charters are reporting a very strong bite for Pacific Sailfish and Blue Marlin. August is a fantastic month to target these majestic pelagics.

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a Blue Marlin on the line. They are considered one of the greatest prizes in sportfishing, offering a legendary challenge on the reel. While finding a behemoth weighing a few hundred pounds is common, expert anglers dream of landing a "grander"—a Blue Marlin that weighs over 1,000 pounds.

Dorado and Roosterfish Frenzies

The charter captains in the marina are reporting plenty of **Dorado (Mahi-Mahi)** catches in the 30-40 pound range lately. Their stunning colors and acrobatic fights make them a favorite for all anglers, and they are excellent on the dinner table. August is historically one of the strongest months for finding these aquatic wonders offshore.

For inshore action, the bite is on for **Roosterfish**. Often found at moderate depths near the coastline, they are an aggressive species that are a blast to wrestle on light tackle. They can't resist live bait like sardines and runners, and while they are strictly catch-and-release, the photo opportunity is second to none.

Safety on the Water: Our Top Priority

There’s nothing our charter captains take more seriously than your safety while on the ocean. When you’re battling powerful fish that can weigh hundreds of pounds and move with incredible speed, it is vital that you listen to all safety instructions from the seasoned crew.

Before every trip, the crew will provide a detailed safety briefing, including the location of all safety equipment. Please pay close attention. Staying alert and aware of your surroundings, especially when a fish is on the line, is key to a successful and incident-free day.

You’ll be in great hands with our highly-experienced charter crews. If you come prepared to listen well, wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction, and follow the crew's directions, you’ll be set for the (safe) adventure of a lifetime.
