August in Costa Rica is a prime time to make your sportfishing dreams a reality. While others may call it the "down season," savvy anglers know the green season offers incredible advantages: a fantastic variety of species, less competition on the water, and prime availability on the best charters. The fishing out of Los Sueños Marina is heating up, and this is what you can expect on the water.
Green Season Bounty: The Top Catches of August

The green season rains are a blessing for sportfishing. Runoff from the lush coastline flushes debris into the ocean, creating natural structures that attract baitfish. This, in turn, creates hotspots for the larger predators you’re here to catch. Because it's not peak tourist season, you can often get your pick of the best charters, meaning more ocean for you.
For the remainder of August, expect classic tropical weather. Mornings are typically sunny with calm seas, with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s (°F). The rain showers, if they arrive, usually roll in during the afternoon, long after the morning bite has peaked.
Offshore Action: Yellowfin Tuna & Pacific Sailfish

Both impressive in size and delicious to eat, **Yellowfin Tuna** are a favorite target for anglers visiting these waters. These powerful fighters respond well to a variety of techniques, including cubing, live bait, and chumming. Our crews are experts at finding the schools and getting you hooked up.
While August isn't considered the absolute peak for **Pacific Sailfish**, our charters are still reporting consistent sightings and catches. Their iconic bill and stunning sail make them a trophy you won’t soon forget. Your captain will know how to find their favorite feeding grounds near reefs and floating debris.
Inshore Trophies: Cubera Snapper & Roosterfish

The inshore bite is on fire. Large **Cubera Snappers** are a common and prized catch on our charters. They love to ambush prey from rocky ledges and reefs. Using a live lobster or crab as bait can entice them out of hiding—but be ready for a powerful fight to reel one in!
The legendary **Roosterfish** is another top target this month. To hook a big one, we recommend slow-trolling large live bait over the inshore reefs. Once hooked, be ready to reel as fast as you can. While they are a catch-and-release species, the photo and the story are trophies that last a lifetime.
