February 15, 2023 Fishing Report

It's the middle of February already, and the fishing season in Costa Rica continues to produce bountiful catches. Weather conditions are ideal now that we are well into the dry season. We are seeing some of the most sought-after bites reeled in in droves.

Do not wait another minute to start planning your next excursion. Adventure Tours Costa Rica is booking fast and ready to reserve your dates for the second half of the month.

Mid-February Fishing Weather: Plan Accordingly

The weather is prime this time of year in Costa Rica. High temperatures can reach approximately 94°F, while cooler days will still reach at least 76°F.

With the warm air, lack of rain, and moderate wind speeds, the fish are drawn to the warm waters of Jaco and will continue to be throughout the upcoming month of March.

What’s Biting in February Along the Central Pacific Coast?

Fishing at Los Suenos

The weather this time of year is perfect for fishing. You will find many exciting catches inshore and offshore in Los Suenos:

Inshore Catches

For inshore fishing, you will want to take advantage of roosterfish season. Once March comes around, roosterfish will be less plentiful. However, these aggressive bites can weigh up to 100 pounds and be caught at depths as low as 50 feet. You should be prepared to go further if you hope for a bigger catch.

Offshore Catches

Much of mid-February's fishing action is going to be offshore. Although you may need to fish at greater depths, these fish are thrilling to reel in. Here are some of the in-season fish you can expect to bite on your next fishing trip:

  • Blue marlin - Blue, black, and striped marlin are at the peak of their season in mid-February. These fish can weigh over 1,800 pounds and reach lengths of more than 16 feet, making them one of the largest species of bony fish in the Central Pacific.
  • Sailfish - Did you know sailfish were some of the fastest in the sea? Sailfish can reach speeds of up to nearly 70 mph. These striking fish will give you a run for your money if you attempt to hook one. Since they will be in peak season through March, now is the time to go after the sailfish you have been dreaming of.
  • Yellowfin tuna - Although yellowfin tuna do not peak until August through October, there is always a chance you can reel in one of these exciting catches when the weather is warm. When you want a catch, you will remember yellowfin tuna is the way to go, as they can often weigh more than 300 pounds.
