July 1–15, 2026 Fishing Report – Los Sueños & Jacó

Report Updated: July 1, 2026 | Valid Through: July 15, 2026

Welcome to the early July fishing report out of Los Sueños, Jacó and Herradura, Costa Rica. The first half of July 2026 is shaping up as an exciting window for anglers, with strong inshore and offshore action across many of our most sought‑after species. Snapper, roosterfish, snook and school‑size yellowfin tuna are active closer to shore, while offshore we are in peak season for dorado and larger yellowfin plus consistent sailfish and marlin. With this level of variety, it is an excellent time to plan multi‑day fishing out of Los Sueños Marina.

Early July Fishing Weather

Now entering our third month of Costa Rica’s green season, we are seeing a familiar pattern of bright mornings followed by afternoon rain. Anglers can expect mostly sunny or partly cloudy starts to the day, with scattered clouds building mid‑morning into early afternoon. By around 2:00–3:00 pm, it is common to see showers or heavier downpours, but in July these usually pass after a couple of hours and often bring cooler air behind them.

Despite the increase in afternoon rainfall, Los Sueños sportfishing remains strong and charter boats are operating on normal schedules. Because we head out onto the Pacific early, we are typically back at the dock before the biggest showers roll through, which lets us maximize fishing time while avoiding the worst of the downpours. On land, daytime temperatures generally range from about 85–87 °F, dipping into the upper 70s to low 80s at night, with the usual tropical humidity. On the water, inshore and offshore sea surface temperatures hover near 82 °F, with slightly cooler pockets of around 77 °F farther offshore where some of the larger tuna are cruising. A light sea breeze keeps conditions comfortable once you are underway.

Offshore Bites

Yellowfin tuna are at or near their peak offshore during the first half of July. Anglers have real chances at fish in the 50–150 lb class on many trips, with occasional shots at even larger yellowfin approaching 200–300 lb in deeper blue water. Targeting these bigger fish is often an all‑day affair that involves running to offshore structure and working current lines patiently, but the payoff is a memorable fight and incredible table fare.

We continue to have good luck using live bait along with a variety of lures to draw big tuna up. Surface poppers and stickbaits fished around spinner dolphin pods can trigger explosive surface strikes, while jigs and deeper presentations pick off tuna marking lower in the water column. Landing a heavy yellowfin demands strong tackle, good technique and some patience, but with the help of experienced captains and mates, even first‑timers can be part of the action. Most of our bigger tuna are released, although we often keep one high‑quality fish for dinner when conditions and regulations allow.

Year‑round offshore and holding steady in July, we are also seeing strong numbers of sailfish and marlin working the same offshore lines. Dorado (mahi‑mahi) are abundant and ranging between inshore and offshore rips, frequently showing up around floating logs, trash lines and other flotsam. A typical July full‑day offshore trip from Los Sueños can easily produce a mixed bag: tuna for the cooler, dorado for the grill and opportunities at one or more billfish releases.

Inshore Bites

Inshore fishing stays productive in early July and is a great choice for families or anglers who prefer shorter runs. Red snapper is one of the most abundant and popular targets inshore this month. These fish hold around rocky areas, reefs and other structure close to the shoreline, and they respond well to both natural baits and well‑presented artificial lures. Snappers are known both for their strong, dogged fights and for their excellent eating qualities, making them a favorite for anglers who want to bring back fresh fillets.

Wahoo is another prized gamefish that remains in good form during July. In the Los Sueños area, wahoo typically relate to reefs, rocks and flotsam pushed in by rains and currents. These sleek predators are famous for blistering runs and powerful strikes, and they can turn a quiet inshore morning into an adrenaline rush in seconds. Wahoo can be taken by high‑speed trolling, casting or jigging, using baits and lures like live baitfish, diving plugs, jigs and spoons.

Along with snapper and wahoo, anglers can also find roosterfish, jacks and snook in the mix along points, river mouths and drop‑offs. Many inshore charters for the first half of July are running as half‑day or 3/4‑day trips, which provide plenty of time to work multiple spots while still getting you back to the marina before afternoon storms become likely.
